Somewhere around the sandy shores of Australia’s famed harbour lies an inlet with slender mansion-fringed beachfronts, World Famous Doyles fish and chips, and tourists in their droves.

It’s here that now lies a refurbished institution, the Watson’s Bay Hotel.

A beacon for all in the burnt and hungry, it stands at the far end of the jetty, only staggering distance from the ferry ride that makes most Australians abroad oft mutter longingly in their dreams.

And so, what better to end that glistening glide across the harbour, than a beer/wine/G&T overlooking from whence you came, standing on a bar, beneath striped sunshades?

*Time passes*

Where am I?! And where did those empty jugs of Sangria come from?

The time passes quickly here until the truly painful stroke of midnight, when one of Sydney’s most trying elements – lack of transport – digs its claws in. Hmmm.

What ho, a trusty steed in the form of the kindly Watsons Bay staff, suggest a quiet recline in their newly built rooms upstairs!

With not many taxis, and even less buses, a stay here is the ideal solution.

The rooms are clean, neat and provide all the basics for a beachside stay. Peter Morrissey toiletries are an unexpected addition to the bathtub, and the balcony facing the water provides absolutely unparalleled views onto the harbour and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Up with the dawn the next stunning day, and a suggested wander up the South Head to where Sir Arthur Phillip plunged anchor 200 years back to mark Sydney the colonial ‘X’ on the English map. Here, the Sirius and Supply ships set up the first British Colony of NSW and what remains is a plinth and a plaque to the event. Also check out the candy-striped lighthouse and sandstone cottage too.

On the way you’ll pass Camp Cove – easily one of Sydney’s best harbour strips to rest your head. This lovely spot is a well-kept secret to tourists who can miss it, and Lady Gray nudist beach – a spot for the earlybirds.

Back for a full breakfast spread at the WBH and you can’t deny you feel you’ve been let in on a little secret… until the first ferry arrives.
