Hotel Club Francés as the name suggests is a French Club. It was founded on May 20th, 1866 by an esteemed elite group of French residents in the legendary Café Malakoff. Located in the Paris of Buenos Aires, the prestigious area called La Recoleta is also home to ancient palaces, embassies and other historic sites of significance. Originally a two floor town house the club kept the entrance and the style of stairs. Most of the artwork derives from Europe, and a large portion of the antique objects have been carefully maintained since the original club days.
Argentinian fencing champions “en guard” here in the courts hidden away in the basement, just one of many traditions that has been kept alive over the years.
Raise a glass to history🍸
Another tradition that has proudly flourished takes place in the bar. Over the years and drinks, many characters and renowned figures have sipped in the 120 year old mahogany surroundings. But these days you’ll more than likely clink your glasses near young socialites, diplomats and writers from across the globe. However, if you arrive on a Monday evening you might witness the old French club in action. Local French descendants gather weekly to practice their mother tongue.
Once an exclusive club, these days its doors are very much open to the public. For the last two years it has been awarded the Travellers Choice Awards with Trip Advisor. Accolades which now proudly hang on the wall at reception. When we walked into our enormous executive suite with bath jacuzzi we knew exactly why. President Obama was in the capital the same week and we’re sure he would’ve felt right at home, had he been in our shoes. Decorated with époque furniture, the room also came with climate control, wifi, cable tv and balcony. Lathered in green tea lotions and donning your bathrobes you’d be forgiven for never leaving your room. But you’d be foolish not to experience the restaurant.
Dine in style 🍴
Admittedly we only had breakfast in the adjacent orangery but not only is the space exquisite – you can enjoy your eggs Benedict under the Buenos Aires sky whatever the weather – but so too was the cuisine. An assortment of international tea and cakes turn morning meal time into a real treat.
A feast for your eyes
If you have the time ask for a tour of the banquet halls. They are magnificent. They can accommodate up to 200 people. And at different points in history literary greats have come here to do talks and pass on their wisdom.
Many French words spring to mind when we think about this fine establishment but it’s the phrase crème de la crème that really sums it up.
Must try – Local Fernet Branca drank with Coke and lemon served in the bar from 4pm.
